Cleveland, MS – North Greenville heads to Delta State on Saturday for the Crusaders' third Gulf South Conference contest of the season.
The Crusaders are searching for their first league win of the season after falling to #1 West Florida a week ago in Tigerville. North Greenville sits at 3-3 on the season but have dropped two straight after starting the year 3-1. Saturday will be NGU's first GSC road trip, the first of two consecutive league bus rides.
Delta State sits at 2-4 at the midway point of the 2021 season. The Statesman opened the season with a pair of non-conference wins but have dropped four straight, including three conference games. The "Fighting Okra" losses have come against three of the league's nationally ranked opponents, two o which were a combined total of seven points.
Delta dropped a one-point decision to #12 West Georgia on the road and relinquished a 20-point lead to #1 West Florida, eventually falling by six. Last week's loss to #4 Valdosta State was the worst of the season for The Statesman, losing 55-0 to the Blazers. Delta State spent a week ranked among Division II teams when they were briefly in the polls at #25.
Series History
North Greenville trails in the series record having just one win compared to Delt State's three wins. The first meeting between the two teams came in 2011 when the Statesman escaped with a 28-23 win over NGU in the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The game was played in Cleveland.
North Greenville's only win in the series came in 2018 when the Crusaders earned a 33-20 win down in Mississippi. The 2017 game, the first between the two programs as Gulf South foes ended with a 33-30 win for DSU in an overtime thriller in Younts Stadium. The 2019 game resulted in a 34-9 loss for North Greenville.
